FESTIVAL DIAPENTE April 13-21, 2007
Sponsored
by the Famiglio Family Foundation
sight sound taste touch fragrance entwined together
[Sarasota, Fl] Festival Diapente, the perfect fifth, was founded with the recognition that Sarasota, Manatee, and the entire West Coast of Florida has a rich cultural landscape
primed for continued harvest. Our culturally rich region has expressed support
and creation of a unified art festival that celebrates not only traditional
arts but also the exploration of art “on the edge.” It’s a multi-day, multi
tiered, and multi-dimensional festival embodying the spirit and energy of our
community through the arts, from visual and performance to abstract and
conceptual. It celebrates our five senses and reaffirms the notion that art has
no boundaries.
Celebrate architecture, music, movement, sound, science and
the visual arts in a splendid evocation of our sub-tropical home. Fashion and
human sensitivities erupt during this seven-day quixotic celebration. The Van
Wezel will be collaborating with many local organizations throughout the week
and taking the festival through the community.

Entertainment for BayBlast includes:
Asheba
Born in the Caribbean, Asheba, known as the "Pied Piper
of Trinidad" is
a renowned world musician who playfully blends reggae,
calypso, neo-folk
and more. In addition to his two albums, he is featured on Putumayo's
Reggae Playground and Caribbean Playground collections.
The Jimmies
The Jimmies are kid sympathizers who work hard to rock their
way into
your world through terribly catchy songs about things that
people of all
ages can relate to...like...um...bedhead...and...sneezing.
Stuff like
that. The Jimmies live in teeny-tiny houses 136 steps away
from each
other in the fragrant town of New York City. They take being
silly very
seriously.
Mayhem Poets
Through the rhythmic interweaving of words and ideas, the
Mayhem Poets
lead you on a verbal adventure that will leave you asking
for more.
This group of multi-talented and eclectic artists and
performers have
come together creatively linked through a passion and
genuine love of the
written and spoken word and its performance. With hip-hop
rhythms and dynamic
theatrical techniques, Mayhem Poets will present poetry like
you've never heard it before.
Ragamala Music and Dance Theater
Founded in 1992, Ragamala Music and Dance Theater is
dedicated to
preserving the South Indian classical dance form while using
it as a
springboard for innovative choreography. Their pioneering
cross-cultural
collaborations demonstrate the versatility, depth, and
contemporary
vitality of their dancing. With a flash of the hand, the
stomp of a foot and
the dart of an eye Ragamala blends the beauty of the past
with their unique
style to inspire the future.
Glenis Redmond
Words have carried Glenis Redmond around the globe, to
performance
venues and classrooms all over the world. Known for praise
poetry and
her captivating performances, she has recently joined the Kennedy Center's
Teaching Artist roster. Glenis spins words into a
celebration of life
and sends them out in powerful performances that match the
beat of
the heart.
VanSlam and the inaugural Sandy Lyne Poetry Celebration
BayBlast! marks the first ever VanSlam and Sandy Lyne Poetry
Celebration at Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. Held in honor of poet Sandy Lyne
who helped introduce local students and teachers to the joy of poetry writing
throughout the year, this event will be held annually to keep the art of poetry
flourishing in our community. Sandy Lyne recently passed away but his work with
area students was instrumental in planting the seed of poetry writing for so
many. The VanSlam will give local student poets the opportunity to perform
their own work on stage in celebration of poetry. Look for the introduction of
our own Poet Laureate at this special poetry event!

Night of a Thousand Stars
Friday, April 20, 9:30 p.m. Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall
Let’s do the math: There are five official senses. The sixth
sense pierces time to see the future. Time is the fourth dimension, the next
beyond the three official dimensions of space. Movies move; they’re the art of
time. So, add senses to cinema. Combine Festival Diapente’s “Sixth Sense Party”
with Sarasota Film Festival’s “Night of a Thousand Stars.” Multiply by hundreds
of partygoers and what do you get? A whole lot of fun. It all adds up.
