Discover the world of stepping with Step Afrika!  Like a tap dance without shoes or a band without instruments, stepping is percussive dance that uses kicks, stomps, claps and chants – all linked to African and modern dance traditions.  Stepping is without question a rising art form and an important part of America’s artistic and cultural heritage.

Founded in December 1994, Washington DC’s world-renowned Step Afrika! is the first professional company devoted to stepping. Serving as a cultural ambassador for the United States, Step Afrika! reaches tens of thousands of Americans each year by bringing their high-energy performance to the stage: a feast for both the eyes and ears.

Use the "Download Study Guide" link to the left to access The Kennedy Center ArtsEdge Step Afrika! CueSheet.  This study guide, created specifically to accompany Step Afrika's educational performances, contains background material about the company, the history of stepping, and useful classroom activities.

Lonnie Collins Motion has so much kinetic energy that his nickname, Locomotion, is perfect.  He’s seen a lot of sadness in his young life but, when he discovers a passion for writing poetry, Lonnie finally finds a way to express his feelings about his family, the fire that took his parents away, his little sister, and his world.  Along with Lonnie, we all learn that something as simple as writing a poem can start a journey of growing up through the discovery of a warm, funny, perceptive, and unique voice.

This performance of Locomotion, presented by The Kennedy Center Theater for Young Audiences on Tour and directed by Jennifer L. Nelson, was adapted by award-winning novelist Jacqueline Woodson from her Coretta Scott King Honor Book of the same name. This inspiring play is about the journey of an eleven year old African American boy as he moves from tragedy to hope, from silence to expression, and from losing one family to gaining a new one. Along with Lonnie, we all learn that something as simple as writing a poem can start a journey of growing up, through the discovery of a warm, funny, perceptive, and unique voice. ."
