Latest Indoor Safety Guidelines

The arts and cultural organizations of Sarasota County* comprise one of the three largest employment sectors of the community. An increasing number of patrons and artists are extremely uncomfortable participating without strong health and safety protocols in place. The failure to secure robust audiences or top artists puts these arts organizations in danger of once again closing their doors, jeopardizing thousands of jobs and millions of dollars the arts infuse into the community each year.

The companies signed below will uphold vigilant health and safety protocols for the protection of our community, patrons, artists, and staff and to maintain the economic stability of our institutions. Therefore, effective September 26, 2021, we will uniformly implement the following policy:

All patrons aged 12 and older attending a performance indoors must show either:

  • A negative PCR COVID-19 test administered by a medical provider/official testing center no earlier than 72 hours before the time of their performance OR
  • A negative rapid antigen COVID-19 test administered by a medical provider/official testing center no earlier than 24 hours prior to the time of their performance. Home testing kit results will not be accepted for entry.

• Both physical and electronic presentation of documents will be accepted. Photo identification must accompany the presentation of all documents.

All patrons over age 6 regardless of vaccination/testing status must wear masks over their nose and mouth at all times while inside the venue.

• If patrons prefer, CDC or other official vaccination record showing the patrons are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (at least 14 days since the final dose) may be voluntarily presented at the door as an acceptable alternative to negative COVID-19 test results.

Protocols will be revisited and may be revised based on CDC guidance and the evolving circumstances of the pandemic, including use of additional screening protocols. Be assured we are taking similar and additional pandemic precautions with our artists, staff, crews, and vendors.

Masks: Patrons are encouraged to bring their own masks, however the Van Wezel will have disposable masks available, if necessary.

Hand sanitizer stations will be accessible throughout the facility and event spaces (i.e. lobbies upon entry and grand foyer where event is taking place).

We have installed UVC sanitation tools, like the UV SaniTower, and Ultravation UVMatrix Disinfection systems in the Air Handles, which improve indoor air quality.

We will be using a fogging machine to mass disinfect all areas with an environmentally responsible PathoCide sanitizer/disinfectant. Per PathoSans, this is “99.999% effective at killing bacteria within seconds” (PathoSans 2020). These areas will be fogged both prior to and following the event.

High touch areas will be disinfected throughout the event, including door handles, handrails, elevator call buttons, counters, etc.

Bathrooms are also equipped with AeraMax multistage HEPA filtration systems, and will be cleaned and disinfected prior to the event, as well as routinely throughout the event.

Theater seats will be disinfected before every performance.

Know before you go: Refreshments by Mattison's at the Van Wezel will be available for purchase. Beginning in October, dining will be offered either as a buffet style or seated meal before the show and during intermissions. Eating and drinking are not allowed inside the auditorium based upon the current recommended safety protocols. For further information on Mattison's Catering, please call (941) 921-3400 or visit

We are following guidelines regarding best practices for sanitization, safety and will continue to do so. We also consult weekly with industry leaders and local performance venues and organizations on safety measures.

As we plan to implement new practices, local and national guidelines continue to evolve. We will continue to monitor any changes in directives and inform you of specific plans as we get closer to re-opening.

We appreciate your understanding and patience and we can't wait to welcome you back to the Van Wezel to enjoy live performances!
